Do Not Wear Contact Lenses While Bathing or Swimming

When purchasing contact lenses, people are generally advised not to let them come into contact with water, and similar warnings are also found in product instructions. However, many people disregard this advice, believing that occasionally forgetting to remove the lenses before showering poses no significant problem. However, once infected by microorganisms in the water, it can lead to blindness, severe pain, and even invasion of the brain or spinal cord, resulting in severe consequences.

Water is a significant source of contamination, potentially containing various bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other microorganisms. Tap water treated with chlorine disinfection can produce substances like chlorite, which can easily damage the lenses. Despite being careful, it is challenging to prevent water, shampoo, or shower gel from entering the eyes while showering. At this point, pathogenic microorganisms can invade the eyes through the water source, proliferating between the contact lenses and the cornea, and eroding the cornea.

If showering for an extended period, the steam in the bathroom can keep the lenses wet, making them stick to the eyeballs and difficult to remove. High-temperature environments not only foster bacterial growth but also severely affect corneal respiration. During a shower, the water flow may wash away the lenses, resulting in unnecessary loss. Long-term wearing of contact lenses while bathing may cause the lenses to harden and deteriorate, affecting their lifespan.

In fact, it's not just bathing—activities related to water should also be avoided when wearing contact lenses. Before participating in swimming, water sports, soaking in hot springs, or using a sauna, always remember to remove your contact lenses. This is not only to protect the lenses but also to take responsibility for the health of your eyes.
